Participant's Voice<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n\n\n\nStudy tour on Oahu from 3\/31-4\/5<\/mark>Fourteen\" students, ranging from 3rd grade elementary school students to 2nd grade high school students, participated in the program. Many of the students came from all over Japan, and many of them were abroad for the first time, and they learned a lot through the activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the presentation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\nThe purpose of the study tour is to,Hawaii is facing serious climate change and environmental problems, and solutions to those problems are being considered.<\/mark><\/strong>Things to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\nIn addition, unlike travel and sightseeing, GLI study tours require participants to take action on their own initiative for their own learning. The study tour participants were given a mindset of what to expect and were able to learn about the current situation in Hawaii through research before the trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/span>First day of arrival<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\nWe visited the Bishop Museum to learn about Hawaiian history and values, and learned how the Hawaiian people have lived in harmony with nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the road in front of the Hawaii State Office Building, which we visited next,\"Trans Lives Matter.\"<\/strong>The demonstration was being held. Cars passing on the road honked their horns loudly one after another to show their approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To one of the demonstrators,\"What do the colors of the flag mean? \"<\/strong>A student asks the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I was told that the color blue, which is considered the color of boys, and the color pink, which is considered the color of girls, with white in between representing transgender and neutral people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, we stayed at the University of Hawaii at Manoa student dormitory this time. We were able to have meals in the same cafeteria as the local university students and catch a glimpse of the students' lives, and from the first day we were exposed to sights and culture that we could not see in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are so lucky!<\/mark><\/strong>We saw not only dolphins, sea turtles, and colorful fish, but also Humpback Whales (humpback whales) making their big leap called breaching!<\/p>\n\n\n\nIn Study Tours,In addition to doing the activities, participants had time to share and reflect on what they felt and learned with each other.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n
'I see a lot of homeless people, but why?'<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n'I was surprised to see so much leftover food in the dorm cafeteria.'<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n'Don't they separate the garbage?'<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nAs they share their findings in Hawaii and ask questions to Japanese university students studying there, such as \"What are you doing in Hawaii?\", they gradually decide on a presentation topic that they would like to explore.<\/p>\n\n\n

<\/span>3rd day<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\nDay 3,Beach cleaning with Aloha Ocean Plus, a local non-profit organization that conducts environmental conservation activities based at Waimanalo Beach<\/mark>The first time we did this, we found that the beach was full of microplastics. Even seemingly clean beaches are full of tiny plastic (microplastics).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Sekiguchi, the representative of the company, who is also a professional underwater photographer,The types of garbage and their impact, and the fact that a lot of plastic is coming from Japan.<\/strong>We spoke with them about the following<\/p>\n\n\n\nStudents willingly asked questions of Mr. Sekiguchi and his staff about their chosen presentation topics and conducted research. I think I overcame my shyness.
